The Verdict

We can't recommend Burns & Scalo. One homeowner paid $716 for a gutter caulk job she never requested, and when the same spot leaked months later the company refused to refund her because she was outside their 30-to-60-day guarantee window. Another customer watched three different crews attempt to fix a leaking skylight under warranty, only to be billed for the repairs and told the resulting interior damage wasn't their problem. We found 16 reviews describing incomplete work, unfinished repairs, and disputes over payment, versus only 14 praising timely service. The pattern is clear: when a job goes smoothly, crews are punctual and professional. But when something goes wrong (leaks, damage, missed appointments), follow-through collapses. One reviewer waited two full days for a crew that showed up five hours late with no apology and borrowed her push broom to finish the work. The company's 30-to-60-day repair window is functionally useless if leaks resurface after that arbitrary cutoff, and we saw multiple examples of exactly that happening.

If you're weighing a quote from Burns & Scalo, ask yourself whether you're willing to gamble on whether your job will be one of the smooth ones. The odds aren't in your favor, and when things go sideways, you'll be on your own.

3 Stories That Stood Out

1. Mindy Cerceo
Google | Oct 27, 2017 |

Mindy Cerceo originally called B&S in December 2016 for a routine gutter cleaning and roof inspection on her ranch-style home. She ended up with a $716 bill after a worker spent about 2.5 hours caulking a gutter leak she never asked them to fix. She paid the invoice, and a company PR representative later conceded she shouldn’t have been billed — yet the same area still leaks, and she learned their policy limits repairs to a 30–60 day guarantee even when customers paid substantial sums. A year later, on 9/28/2017, she called them back when water began entering a bedroom; they charged $268 to caulk that spot. After paying again, the leak persisted, they returned to re-caulk, and the problem continued. The company refused a refund despite the repair failing within their supposed guarantee window. Calls that were initially returned have since gone unanswered. When she suggested the company might be using customer fees to help finance a new building in Pittsburgh, the PR rep replied, “You are probably right.” The throughline of her experience: being billed for unrequested or ineffective caulking work, paying twice for leaks that never got fixed, and encountering a limited guarantee and,

2. G K.
Yelp | Jul 19, 2018 |

G K. had a skylight put into their home and quickly discovered it leaked badly. They called the emergency crew, who climbed up, worked on the skylight and left insisting “it's fixed.” A week of rain proved otherwise; another crew showed up, again declared “it's fixed,” and when further storms produced more water a third team came out with the same message. By that point interior ceilings and walls showed extensive water damage, but the company shifted responsibility—refusing to repair the inside, calling it a roof issue rather than a skylight problem. On top of that, G K. received a bill for the repair work that should have been covered under warranty, and when they complained a company representative laughed and insisted payment was required. The lasting image: repeated assurances of “it's fixed,” escalating interior damage, and a billed warranty repair coupled with a dismissive response from the company.

3. Libby L.
Yelp | Aug 10, 2019 |

Libby L. had a problem many roofers avoid: a flat roof on a house addition had settled at a bad angle so water overflowed onto a lower roof and started leaking into the kitchen. After being bounced from contractor to contractor because of the box-gutter/flat-roof complexity, she landed on this company as the only feasible option. Early on the project stumbled — the company hesitated over whether the residential or commercial crew should handle the job, and the first two technicians recommended a temporary, band-aid fix that made her uneasy. When she pushed back, one of them leaned on years of experience; eventually a higher-level employee stepped in, took the time to inspect the whole situation and proposed better, longer-lasting solutions, which she accepted. The office executives and customer service handled things well, and the actual repair work ultimately looks sound. The standout problem was the job-site execution and communication. A crew was scheduled to arrive with pre-bent metal at 2 p.m. and didn’t show or call. Customer service investigated and explained the parts weren’t ready, promising the crew would pick them up and arrive at 8 a.m. the next day — they didn’t. A gar

What You Can Expect

01

1. Rebecca Kent
Google | Mar 3, 2026 |

Rebecca went into a roof replacement on her home wanting the job handled cleanly and without drama, and Burns & Scalo delivered exactly that. Troy Kuhn took the time to walk her through each step, making sure she understood the process and that everything stayed on track from start to finish. The crew handled the roof itself with care, worked neatly, and left the property tidy when they were done. What stood out most was how smoothly the whole project moved, with the communication as polished as the workmanship.

2. Eric L.
Yelp | Oct 23, 2017 |

Eric ended up with a solar array and a new metal roof on his home, and at first the experience looked like a win: the solar work was handled well, the follow-up was strong, and he loved the finished panels and the sturdier roof that replaced the old shingles. The trouble came from the gutters installed at the same time. Three 40-foot runs were hung badly, with the low points sitting in the middle instead of draining properly, and one gutter even had metal debris left inside it. Within a year, brackets had fallen off, leaves and dirt piled up, and the mess sent water into his house three separate times, enough to damage a light fixture over the front door and raise worries about mold. Scalo came out twice but never solved the leak, and after Eric climbed up himself and found the workmanship problems, he reached out to ask about rehanging the gutters and adding gutter covers at his own expense. John Scalo initially agreed that sounded reasonable, but after that the calls and emails stopped.

3. Eric Lantzman
Google | Oct 23, 2017 |

Eric Lantzman booked a full home solar installation plus a metal roof replacement and walked away impressed by the finished panels and the sturdiness of the new roof — he particularly appreciated the company's IT setup and follow-up during that phase. The good work, however, unraveled because of the gutter installation. Three 40-foot gutter runs were hung incorrectly, each sagging toward the middle; brackets fell off in under a year, and scrap metal left in one run trapped leaves and dirt. That buildup caused his house to flood three times and burned out the porch light above the door. Scalo crews came back twice but could not find the cause; after Eric climbed onto the roof and identified the poor workmanship himself, he contacted the company asking them to rehang the gutters and offered to buy gutter covers. John Scalo agreed that sounded reasonable, yet calls and emails have gone unanswered since. He ended up with excellent panels and a solid metal roof, but what will stick with him — and a prospective buyer — is the badly hung gutters that flooded his home and the sudden silence when he pushed for a fix.

1. Kim H.
Yelp | Feb 27, 2019 |

Kim H. called Burns and Scalo back to her facility to fix roof work the company had done a couple years earlier. Ray and Jack showed up on time, corrected the problem, and photographed the completed repairs so she could see exactly what had been done. The punctual visit, hands-on repair, and the after-work photos left her reassured that the issue was properly resolved — the photo documentation was the detail that stuck with her.

2. Anthony Miller
Google | Mar 30, 2026 |

Anthony had his roof replaced, and what stood out most was how hard the crew worked on what was clearly a full-on job. Dan’s team kept at it with a professional calm, cleaned up behind themselves as they went, and left the property looking orderly instead of torn up. When the main work wrapped, Steve came by to clear out the leftover materials and even re-secured the weather mast that had been hanging away from the house. By the end, the new roof looked sharp, and the whole experience reflected a crew that treated the home with care from start to finish.

3. Sam J.
Yelp | Jun 17, 2022 |

Sam J. hired the company for a residential solar install and watched the job unravel. The crew stretched the schedule with one excuse after another, stopped returning, and left open holes in his roof that sat exposed to rain for weeks. When he refused to pay for work that had made his roof worse, the company responded by filing a complaint at district justice. He noticed the pattern echoed an earlier review from 7/19/18 and is now facing a legal dispute instead of a finished system—ending up with a hole-riddled roof, weeks of water exposure, and a court filing over the unpaid balance.

1. Gilbert DeBenedetti
Google | Dec 10, 2024 |

When the installation wrapped up, Gilbert received a detailed, in-person walk-through of the finished work that included a large set of photos documenting the job. He appreciated the face-to-face review and the visual record that showed exactly what had been done. He left clearly impressed—what stayed with him most was the thorough, photo-rich explanation of the project.

2. Adam J.
Yelp | Nov 29, 2022 |

Adam J. hired Burns & Scalo to knock out a few small repairs flagged by a home inspection while preparing to sell his house. He accepted a posted travel charge on the work authorization, but when the bill arrived he discovered a $200 trip fee for an 11.5-mile drive — roughly 17.39 cents per mile. A two-man crew was on site for less than an hour, and that trip fee ended up costing more than the labor and parts combined. When he called about the charge, he was told it’s too difficult and time-consuming to give an accurate trip-fee estimate upfront, which left him concluding the company either knowingly overcharges or can’t calculate its fees. His clearest takeaway: a $200 travel fee on an 11.5-mile job — larger than the repair itself — made the whole experience feel overpriced and frustrating.

3. john jacob
Google | Oct 15, 2019 |

John Jacob paid a large amount for a solar installation and discovered the installation crew lacked the skill he expected. He ended up frustrated that an expensive project felt like it was handled by unskilled labor. His takeaway: in his experience a high price did not buy competent workmanship.
